Essential oils can be used many ways. Let's explore how to use them effectively.

Ways to Use Essential Oils

  1. Massage
  2. Liniments
  3. Inhalation
  4. Shower and Bath
  5. Diffusers and Nebulizers
  6. Perfumes and Colognes

Massage or Contact with Skin

Some essential oils can be applied directly on the skin "neat", meaning undiluted. Some need to be diluted in a carrier oil before applying to prevent possible skin irritation.

Essential oils can also be added to moisturizers and used during self-massage. Nefertem offers moisturizers with essential oils already blended in.

Liniment

The term liniment is used to indicate a medicinal topical treatment. While the FDA prohibits describing the healing benefits of essential oils, many will find, by use, what works for them.

When creating an essential oil liniment, combine 10-30 drops of essential oil with 10ml of carrier oil and massage into the affected area. Sweet almond oil makes an excellent carrier oil for liniments as does grapeseed oil, sunflower oil and jojoba oil.

Inhalation

Inhalation of essential oils has been shown to have mainly a psychological effect. Some say this effects our emotions, hormones, energy levels and moods

To use, simply place 1-3 drops of desired essential oil on a tissue or cotton ball and inhale through the nose until the desired effect is obtained. Store cotton ball in a plastic bag for use more than once.

To steam inhale, simply place hot water (to invoke the steam) into a heat-safe bowl and combine with 2-4 drops of essential oil of choice. Place a towel over your head and place your face CAREFULLY over the hot steam, making sure not to touch the hot water. Inhale and enjoy the experience.

Shower and Bath

Shower inhalation can be extremely beneficial for energizing your morning or relaxing your evening. It can also be a moment of meditation for some.

Nefertem offers handcrafted, holistic soap infused with essential oils that create an aromatherapy experience like nothing you've ever tried before.

Alternatively, simply place 3-5 drops of essential oils directly on your hot washcloth and place over your face to inhale.

Essential oils can also be dropped directly into the bath.

Diffusers and Nebulizers

Diffusers and Nebulizers can carry scents throughout your home, office or car. For use in diffuser, place 3-8 drops of essential oils into the water and turn on (if electric) or light a candle below to activate the heat source.

For use in a nebulizer, place 3-8 drops inside specialized chamber and turn on to enjoy unadulterated, pure essential oil fragrance in your home.

Perfumes and Colognes

Perfumes and colognes are a great way of adding essential oils to your daily life. Just spray your clothes and enjoy the aroma all day long.

Nefertem offers aromatherapy sprays that double as natural perfumes!

Precautions

Careful consideration should be taken with essential oils. Just because an ingredient is natural, does not mean that you won't have a reaction or allergy to it. Always patch test first and discontinue use if any adverse reactions occur.
