People have been turning to meditation for years to help relieve stress, lower anxiety, and increase mental focus. In fact, we are constantly learning new benefits of a regular meditation practice.

But did you know it can improve your skin as well?

Yes! Meditation and skin care can go hand-in-hand, with products that support this intentional practice. Imagine, as you massage your lotion into your skin, you tap into your spiritual self, quiet your mind, and tune into your slow, deep breathing.

Enjoying this relaxed state of mind daily, as a part of your sacred bathing routine, can benefit you in so many ways. Let's explore.

Lower levels of stress result in healthier skin

It’s no secret that increased levels of stress aren’t good for you or your skin. When your stress levels rise, your body releases cortisol into the bloodstream which in turn causes excess oil production. Hello, blackheads and breakouts!

Excess cortisol levels also contribute to wrinkles and sagging skin. And this is just scratching the surface of how stress attacks our skin.

Stress can additionally cause internal inflammation as a result of an overactive immune system to increased cortisol levels which then can cause skin conditions like rosacea, psoriasis, and acne to flare up.

It only stands to reason that since meditation has been proven to reduce stress levels that it will, by default, cause your skin to look much healthier and younger.

This study showed a significant drop in cortisol from the practice of mindful meditation alone.

Meditation can actually “turn off” the aging gene

Dr. Howard Chang, a dermatologist from Stanford University, singled out a protein that is responsible for regulating the aging process of the skin called the NF-KB protein. Meditation is believed to turn off, or block, this protein causing the aging process to slow down significantly.

Ways to boost your mediation experience

So now that we know how beneficial meditation can be for our skin, let’s look at how we can take our meditation practice to the next level.

  • Find a comfortable position to sit in. Wear soft clothing that feels good on your skin.
  • Dim the lights.
  • Turn on soothing instrumental music or nature sounds. Soft piano keys tinkling in the background, the sound of waves crashing on the shore, or the sound of an oscillating fan can all create great background noise.
  • Light an oil-infused candle or use this aromatherapy spray to stimulate your olfactory system. Essential oils such as lavender, lemon, orange, or clary sage are great for alleviating stress and promoting relaxation.
  • Remember, meditation works best when all the senses are engaged.
