To lose your way is one way of finding it. - Swahili proverb
We can't help how we were shaped while growing up. The values of our family, educational institutions, religious organizations and society norms have all contributed to our self-structuring. Some for the better, some not so much.
What we can help is what we do once we become aware of this programming. We can "lose our way" temporarily while we reflect on our foundation.
This week's proverb encourages us to become who WE determine we are supposedĀ to be.
Questioning what we were taught growing up doesn't devalue who we are, it enhances it. Assessing our norms can help us see clearly what resonates with us now and what doesn't. This can give us direction on what to work on and why we are working on it.
The thing is, we will never know who we were meant to be unless we break free from who we were structured to be. Once we do this, we will emerge a new, self-defined spirit, confident in who we are.
