The fool speaks, the wise man listens. - African proverb
We all want to be heard. We all feel we have something meaningful to say. At times, we might even feel that what WE have to say is more important that what another has to say.
This position, however, is more often than not, highly problematic and usually unproductive. We tend to come across as arrogant fools rather than helpful or wise.
This week's reflection is a reminder of the importance of listening.
Carefully listening is a sign of respect and compassion.
When we actively listen, we gain valuable insight into others AND ourselves. We can catch important details, create empathy, and gain a deeper understanding from the person who is speaking.
As careful listeners, we also tend to gain respect from those around us. We appear willing to cooperate even in the face of conflict because we're willing to hear all sides.
We tend to become the person others seek out for guidance and friendship because we're less focused on our own opinions and more focused on exploring new information.
This week, let's focus on listening first, seeking to understand, then speaking. Let's see how it changes the dynamic of our day!
