The Essence & Benefits of Helichrysum Essential Oil

Essence of Helichrysum Essential Oil
Energetically, this essential oil is vibrant, lively and holistic. One inhalation can invoke the image of a beaming ray of sunshine.
It has a fruity, tea-like aroma with a long-lasting roundness that fills your olfactory system with the essence of ‘release’. It has been discussed as a tool for helping strong emotional blockages.
Physically, Helichrysum is also incredible for skin care and general well-being. It has a long history of use by many cultures around the world and deserves a permanent spot in your daily routine.
Helichrysum Nomenclature & Origins
Helichrysum is known by two common names: Everlasting and Immortelle . Its scientific name is Helichrysum italicum or H. angustifolium. The prefix ‘Heli’ is greek for sun and ‘chrysum’ for gold, referring to this oil’s bright flowering heads.
It is an intensely aromatic shrub with a woody base and an abundance of bundled flowers. It shares the same family as the sunflower and chamomile plants.
Helichrysum grows wild throughout hardiness (or growing) zones 7-9, including northern and southern Africa, southeast asia, southern USA and along the Mediterranean Sea.
A rare and fine oil, Helichrysum commands a high price for a small quantity. As with fine wine, it is also known for getting better with age.
Benefits of Helichrysum Oil
Not only is Helichrysum great for helping the skin stay soft, smooth and hydrated, but its natural anti-inflammatory ability helps soothe irritated and inflamed skin. Some have indicated the immediate relief of topical pain and sensitivity; others, anti-itch effects. These properties lend themselves to the treatment of eczema, psoriasis and rashes.
Helichrysum essential oil is a known cicatrisant, which means that it speeds up the formation of new, healthy cells and works to recycle old cells. It is also antimicrobial and antiseptic, making it an excellent choice in the healing of wounds. I personally watched Helichrysum (with lavender and vetiver) return my husband’s 2nd degree burned skin back to almost completely normal within a 3 week period. Impressive!
Helichrysum essential oil is a known hepatic, which establishes its strong relationship with the liver. It is considered a blood purifier and helps drain the lymphatic system. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is it used to regulate the flow of Qi and bile.
Using Helichrysum Essential Oil
Helichrysum lends itself to body butters, balms and massage oils very well. A lymphatic massage with an oil infusion of Helichrysum oil can render amazing results. Helichrysum, especially in an all-natural body butter, works well for daily use to smooth and hydrate the skin.
It can also be diffused in the home to invoke a cheery calmness unique to its pleasant aroma.
